CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Eastern Shore Rail Trail Foundation will celebrate a major milestone next week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of the first completed section of the Eastern Shore Rail Trail.
The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 20, at 10 a.m. at the Cape Charles Trailhead, 2 Fig Street, adjacent to Rayfield’s Pharmacy.
The event will officially recognize completion of the first section of the developing rail trail, which is envisioned as a new recreational and transportation corridor along Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The Cape Charles trailhead serves as the southern gateway to the project, providing access for bicyclists, walkers and other trail users. The developing trail is expected to create new connections between Eastern Shore communities while providing additional opportunities for outdoor recreation and bicycle tourism.
The ribbon cutting represents an important step in the larger effort to transform portions of the former railroad corridor into a multi-use trail extending northward through the Shore.
The Eastern Shore Rail Trail Foundation is hosting the Aug. 20 celebration. Residents, cyclists, trail supporters and members of the community are invited to attend.
