The Town of Cape Charles will join Virginia’s Sail 250 celebrations this summer as an official affiliate harbor, hosting SailFest Cape Charles from June 19-21, 2026.
The three-day waterfront festival will bring a fleet of historic tall ships and traditional Chesapeake Bay vessels to the harbor, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore maritime history up close. Featured vessels scheduled to appear include the Kalmar Nyckel, Lynx, AJ Meerwald, and Luna.
Organizers say the event is designed to celebrate both the nation’s 250th anniversary and the Eastern Shore’s deep maritime roots. In addition to free public tours of the visiting ships, the festival will feature Chesapeake Bay oyster buy boats, period reenactors, local history presentations, children’s activities, live music, fireworks, food vendors, and a curated artisan market along the waterfront.

One of the festival’s hands-on attractions will allow children to sail Sunfish sailboats with instructors, while fife and drum corps performances and live entertainment on the bandshell stage are planned throughout the weekend. A Saturday evening concert will feature the popular nautical-themed band Three Sheets to the Wind.
Local officials say SailFest Cape Charles is expected to draw visitors from across the region and provide a major boost for local businesses during the summer tourism season. The event also positions Cape Charles as part of the broader statewide Sail Virginia℠ 2026 celebration commemorating America’s semiquincentennial.
