Cape Charles Town Council Moves Regular Meetings to Wednesdays

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council has approved a change to its regular meeting schedule, moving its standing meetings from Thursdays to Wednesdays beginning next month.

The change was approved during Thursday’s regular council meeting through the adoption of Resolution No. 20260716, which changes the council’s regular meeting day to the first Wednesday of each month.

Town officials said the adjustment was prompted by scheduling conflicts and is intended to provide a more consistent meeting calendar. During discussion, it was also suggested that council work sessions be held on the first Wednesday, with regular business meetings taking place on the third Wednesday of each month, although the resolution formally establishes the new standing meeting day.

Virginia law allows local governing bodies to modify their meeting schedules. Under Section 15.2-1416 of the Code of Virginia, a locality may establish or change the dates of its regular meetings through the adoption of a resolution. The law also requires that notice of the change be posted at the meeting location and published in a local newspaper at least seven days before the new meeting schedule takes effect.

The move represents a procedural change rather than a policy shift but will affect when residents, business owners and community organizations attend council meetings or appear before the governing body.

Town officials are expected to update the meeting calendar on the town’s website and other public notices to reflect the new schedule. Residents planning to attend upcoming meetings are encouraged to verify the revised dates as the new calendar is implemented.
