While Orwell never used the terms gaslighting , cancel culture, or critical race theory, this quotation suggests these words would be part of the lexicon of the new speak of the dystopian world he wrote about and as is of the currency of the woke world of today.
The origin of cancel culture can be traced back to Robespierre and the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution (1789-1799) when the monarchy and the established church were cancelled by the guillotine. Karl Marx took culture cancellation to a new level but it was not implemented until Lenin who’s first project after the revolution in 1917 was to cancel the past by tearing down all symbols of czarist history, statutes, memorials, et al … Stalin ordered Trotsky be cancelled from Russian history by having his name deleted from every public record as if he never existed. Mao mobilized his Re Guard to cancel what he called the “Four Olds”: old customs, old attitudes, old habits, and old ideas. Pol Pot, another Marxist, organized the Kymer Rouge to transform Cambodia from its past (cancel) into a communist agrarian society with a quarter of the citizens executed (cancelled). Cuba, North Korea,… always the Marxist dialectic.
Today, in the United States, the cancel culture has spread its talons everywhere: the college campus, all forms of media, corporate board rooms, and has become a tenet of the Democrat Party. Any symbol or memorial to our past history is a target, spearheaded by the 1619 Project and the Critical Race Theory gaslighted by leftist elitists. Everything is reduced to the intersectionality of race and radical ideology.
Cancel culture was achieved in Russia, China, Cambodia et al via the Marxist predicate of violent revolution. In the United States, this revisionist movement is the primary purpose of the gaslighting of the progressive left sans revolutionary blood but not without violence or threat of.
Gaslighting is the covert psychologic manipulation of a person or group to sew seeds of doubt and cause victims to question their memory, perception, judgement, and reality of what they see with their own eyes. It uses contradiction, misinformation, and disinformation. It delegitimizes belief and values… undermines ability to distinguish between right and wrong…pathologically brings dependence on the gaslighter for thoughts and feeling (CNN, WAPO et al).
Two of the most troubling issues arising from gaslighting of the left are the 1619 Project propagated by the gaslighting NY Times and now taught in over 2.500 schools; and the Critical Race Theory being widely gaslighted by the Democrat Party and media appendages.
The 1619 Project rewrites our history to say our founding was not in 1776 with Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War but by the institution of slavery in Virginia at Jamestown in 1619. This insistence, despite the objection and contradiction of every historian of note.
Critical Race Theory appropriates the dialectic of Marxism to race relations in America. The centrality of race in the dialogue of every political/social Issue is the new ideology of the Democrat Party and has become the metric in identity politics and by which all our institutions are judged. Everything is mirrored in white supremacy.
The predicates for understanding the narratives of the left, therefore, are gaslighting, cancel culture, and critical race theory. To which must be added that which is oblivious and/or censured as if it never happened and thus did not.
