On September 24, 2016, members of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Community gathered in Cape Charles, Virginia for the first Eastern Shore Out of the Darkness Walk. Over 200 walkers and volunteers came together to celebrate and honor the lives of those who struggle with mental illness and who were lost to suicide.
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide is preventable. Because of this walk and the generous donations and sponsorships of our community members and local business owners, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention raised almost $10,000. All proceeds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Virginia Chapter. The money helps communities, such as ours, promote walks, research and advocacy for depression and suicide.
The Eastern Shore Suicide Prevention Task Force, in partnership with the Eastern Shore Community Services Board and the Community Partners of the Eastern Shore, would like to thank each person and organization who helped to make this event the success that it was. It is because of your contributions of time and money that we are one step closer to a world free from suicide.
