Cape Charles – On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the Historic District Review Board convened for its regular meeting to review several Certificate of Appropriateness applications. The board approved three significant window replacement projects, each with specific conditions to ensure compliance with the Cape Charles Historic District Overlay Guidelines (CCHODG).
519 Mason Avenue
The first application involved replacing eighteen existing 2/2 double-hung wood windows with eighteen 2/2 double-hung vinyl windows on a single-family home. The board approved this application on the condition that CCHODG Section 5.4.1 (2) (c) is followed, ensuring that the replacements maintain the historic character of the property.
644 Monroe Avenue
The second application sought approval to replace nine existing wood casement windows with six double glider composite windows in the sunroom of a home. This too was approved, contingent on adherence to CCHODG Section 5.4.1 (2) (c). The board emphasized the importance of preserving the visual integrity of the historic district while accommodating modern updates.
102 Randolph Avenue
The third application involved a more extensive project: replacing twenty-nine existing 1/1 double-hung wood windows with 2/2 double-hung wood windows, and three existing 1/1 wood windows with three 1/1 vinyl windows. The board approved this application, also with the stipulation that CCHODG Section 5.4.1 (2) (c) is followed. This ensures that the changes respect the architectural heritage and aesthetic standards of the historic district.
The approvals reflect the board’s commitment to balancing historic preservation with contemporary needs. By imposing conditions that require adherence to the Cape Charles Historic District Overlay Guidelines, the board aims to protect the area’s historic character while allowing homeowners to update and maintain their properties.
The next meeting of the Historic District Review Board is scheduled for June 18, 2024, where additional applications and preservation efforts will be discussed. For more information on the board’s activities and guidelines, visit www.capecharles.org/historic-district-review-board.
