CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Visitors with mobility challenges will have an easier time reaching the shoreline at Kiptopeke State Park, thanks to a new donation from the park’s nonprofit support group.
Friends of Kiptopeke State Park has given the park a Sand Rider beach wheelchair, a specialized chair built to roll over sand rather than sink into it. The equipment will let guests who use wheelchairs, or who otherwise struggle on soft terrain, get down to the Chesapeake Bay’s edge and take part in the beach experience alongside family and friends.
Kiptopeke, located near Cape Charles on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, is one of the region’s most popular outdoor destinations. In addition to its swimming beach, the park offers a fishing pier, boat ramp, picnic areas, camping, cabins, hiking trails, and birdwatching, along with seasonal programs on natural history and bay ecology.

The Sand Rider chair will be available for public use through the park. Visitors interested in reserving it are asked to contact the park office ahead of time to check availability and receive instructions and safety guidance.
Friends of Kiptopeke State Park is a 501(c)(3) volunteer organization dedicated to conservation, education, and enhancing the visitor experience at the park. The group says it welcomes new members interested in helping preserve and improve the Eastern Shore landmark.
