Letter: Concerns Regarding Aerial Spraying Near Residential Areas

To the Editor,

I am writing out of deep concern regarding repeated aerial spraying occurring near residential homes on the Eastern Shore. Yesterday morning, sometime between approximately 7:00 and 9:00 a.m., a small aircraft once again flew extremely low over the area near our residence, adjacent to agricultural fields, actively spraying chemicals.

My household — which includes multiple residents — experienced headaches, coughing, and general illness afterward. While I cannot definitively state the cause, it is difficult not to question whether exposure to whatever was being dispersed may have contributed. The lack of transparency surrounding these spraying operations is troubling.

What concerns me most is the complete absence of warning or public notification. Residents living near these fields receive no alerts, no information about what substances are being sprayed, and no opportunity to take precautions such as closing windows, remaining indoors, or temporarily leaving the area.

People living in rural communities deserve the same consideration and public health protections as anyone else. If aerial spraying is necessary, there should at minimum be clear communication to nearby residents regarding when it will occur and what chemicals are being used.

Many families on the Eastern Shore live in close proximity to farmland and may feel powerless to object, especially those without the financial means to relocate. That should not mean they are expected to quietly endure repeated chemical exposure without answers.

I hope this issue can receive greater public attention and discussion within our community.
