Last April the Council formally requested this change via resolution (see image below). Heading west on Stone Road, the speed limit will be dropping to 40 mph at the Cassatt Parkway, and then to 25 mph at Hermitage Road (just east of the Brewery).
Just after the request was approved, the town put up mobile sign out to alert drivers of the coming change. The VDOT installation crew installed the new signs this week. The town also requested rumble strips on the west bound lane just east of the new 25 mph zone to alert drivers of the need to slow down. These rumble strips were also approved, but will be installed at a later date.

On April 15, 2021, due to safety concerns with increased traffic along Stone Road / Route 184, the Cape Charles Town Council adopted a resolution requesting the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to modify the speed limit on a portion of that road. The Town requested the extension of the existing 25 MPH speed limit past the Cape Charles Brewing Company property located at 2198/2218 Stone Road to Hermitage Road for the safety of the employees, customers, residents and visitors to the Cape Charles Brewing Company and the Town of Cape Charles.
The Town also requested a step-down speed limit of 40 MPH from the intersection of Route 184 / Stone Road to VA-462 / Cassatt Parkway to the intersection of Route 184 / Stone Road and Hermitage Road, along with the installation of rumble strips on the west bound lane of Route 184 / Stone Road just east of the 25 MPH zone.
Town Manager John Hozey received notification last week that the request was approved. Due to the availability of the VDOT crew, the speed limit changes will go into effect on Wednesday, June 23. We apologize for the short notice, but we have to work on VDOT’s schedule. The rumble strips were also approved but we have not been notified when they will be installed.
Chief Pruitt has placed a message board along Route 184 / Stone Road to notify drivers of the upcoming speed limit changes.
Please be aware and remain alert to these changes. Chief Pruitt strongly recommends that golf carts continue to use the existing golf cart path to the Cape Charles Brewing Company until safety improvements (rumble strips) have been installed and drivers become accustomed to the new speed limit.

I hope now a real safe cart path can be added to the site of the road. Add a 5 foot wide multimodal path on each side of the road. Lets invest in safety.
