Many a true word is spoken in jest, an addage that appears in the Prologue to “The Cook’s Tale” (written in 1390) by Geoffrey Chaucer: “Ful ofte in game a sooth I have herd saye!”
The phrase is well known from Shakespeare’s MacBeth, “Be n’t angry with this fellow, I protest That many a true word hath been spoke in jest.”
James Joyce combined this sentiment with a similar adage of in vino veritas to coin the phrase in risu veritas (in laughter, truth).
Sometimes you try and make a stupid joke, and the real sentiment just slips out. This happened to Joe Biden as he attempted to address our troops during a speech in Abu Dhabi on March 7, 2016 while he was serving under former President Barack Obama. Team Biden issued a statement this week after the video resurfaced on YouTube, “The comment was made in Jest.”
As a veteran of Democrat Lyndon Baines Johnson’s fiasco in VEET NAM who came back to this now-sorry country to be spit on and reviled by the liberal and progressive folks who told us we should be responsible for our own medical care after being wounded; it was our own fault for going, afterall, I truly find it hard to find anything at all remotely funny or amusing with what goofy old Joe Biden is reported to have said there, notwithstanding any BULL**** his campaign might have put out, precisely because the types of people goofy old Joe is pandering to for his votes called us then and still do the same kind of things.
Do I think goofy old Joe, who received student draft deferments during the period of the VEET NAM war while other Americans, the less privileged, were bleeding and dying in the mud so goofy old Joe could live the good life back here and after he completed his studies, was classified by the Selective Service System as unavailable for service due to a history of asthma, although that history of asthma didn’t prevent him from being a standout halfback and wide receiver on the Archmere Academy in Claymont high school football team, where he played on the baseball team as well, nor did his asthma keep him from playing halfback for the Fightin’ Blue Hens freshman football team, and defensive back for the varsity at the University of Delaware in Newark, was telling the truth as he sees it and believes it, and as his base believes it, when he called the troops “you stupid bastards?”
Of course I do.
I’ve heard the same thing from too many other Democrats to think otherwise.
“CLAP FOR” JOE BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT …. “you stupid bastards”, for “in risu veritas”‼️
Thank you CCM for your documentation of duplicity.
For those of us who grew up during the viet nam war era
There was a draft
It only included males
If you were classified 1A
You were most likely going to Viet Nam
You had no choice except to try and flee the country
At that time if you fled this government considered you a traitor and should you be caught you faced treason charges and could face life in prison
So for those who say you had a choice
REALLY! You have no idea of what you speak especially if you were not there .
You could have caught a bad case of asthma like goofy old Joe “Corn Pop” Biden did – that was a choice you had that did not require anyone to run off to Canada and be a traitor.
I think Democrat Charley “Chuck” Schumer had a double hang-nail that kept him out, so there were other choices available for those who didn’t want to go to Viet Nam like Bill Clinton didn’t other than being a traitor by running off to Canada.
The asthma dodge “Corn Pop” Biden used is a good one, for sure, but it certainly isn’t the only one, for certain as Charley “Chuck” Schumer proved when he got to stay out too, like Bill Clinton did.
