About our pet of the week, Butter & Bella
As far as Butter herself is concerned, she’s a big dog. This petite 7 lb. Chihuahua may look tiny and fragile, but she doesn’t seem to know that. Butter, along with her soulmate Bella, a Jack Russell terrier, is one half of a bonded pair, and the two of them can only be adopted together. Here at the shelter we’ve learned that if someone picks Bella up to carry her outdoors for some exercise and a potty break or up front to the lounge for some cuddle time with our volunteers, Butter very obligingly trails along behind so she can avoid being separated from her friend. But despite being barely half Bella’s size, Butter doesn’t hesitate to steal her best friend’s food if she can get away with it. At 5 years and 2 months old, she’s Bella’s senior by almost a full year, so maybe she just thinks that age has its privileges no matter what her relative size happens to be.
Both of the girls love to cuddle and ride in a car. They’ve lived in a home before and play well with children. Up to date with their vaccines, they’ll be going on the Neuter Scooter for spay surgery on Oct. 14 and will be ready to go to a new home after that.

Our staff has found that it’s as easy to just pick Bella up and carry her outside for some exercise and a potty break or upfront to the lounge for some cuddle time with our volunteers as it is to take the time to put a leash on her. Bella is quite content to ride along in someone’s arms, and Butter happily trots along behind to avoid being separated from her friend. At 4 years and 3 months old, Bella is the younger of the two girls by almost a year. Despite being almost twice Butter’s size, she sometimes is the victim of food theft by her older and slightly more assertive friend. On the other hand, she doesn’t hesitate to take possession of any toys that she finds lying around and collect them all next to her.
You’ll see in her photos that Bella has a condition called cherry eye in her left eye. It’s a benign cosmetic condition but can be corrected by surgery if it starts to bother her in any way. Both of the girls love to cuddle and to ride in a car.

In the meantime, if you have room in your family for this delightful duo and want to get a head start on the adoption process, you can go ahead and request an adoption application for Butter and Bella by contacting shorespca@gmail.com or by stopping at the shelter to pick up an application Tuesday-Saturday after 10am.
