PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A nonpartisan public-interest litigation group is urging a criminal investigation into Portsmouth Public Schools after the division allegedly used taxpayer resources to host a campaign rally for now Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger in August.
The Liberty Justice Center says the school division provided I.C. Norcom High School at no cost for the rally, which featured Spanberger and Jay Jones, the Democratic attorney general candidate who won his race last week.
“This is just a gross misuse of public money and resources,” Brendan Philbin, senior counsel at the Liberty Justice Center, told Fox News Digital. He said teachers, custodians and other staff should have been preparing for the upcoming school year rather than facilitating “a gratuitous political event.”
Philbin said the group believes the value of staff time and school resources exceeded the $1,000 threshold that would make such use of public assets a felony under Virginia law.
