WACHAPREAGUE, Va. — The Town of Wachapreague will hold a special meeting Oct. 8 to present the conceptual framework for a new stormwater plan aimed at addressing drainage, flooding and runoff issues in the Eastern Shore community.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at VIMS Seaside Hall, 40 Atlantic Ave. Town officials said all interested residents and other parties are invited to attend.
The meeting will provide the public with an opportunity to learn about the framework being developed for Wachapreague’s Stormwater Plan and the town’s approach to managing rainfall and runoff.
Stormwater planning is particularly important in low-lying coastal communities, where heavy rainfall, limited drainage capacity and high water levels can combine to create localized flooding. A comprehensive plan can help a locality identify problem areas, evaluate existing drainage infrastructure and establish priorities for future improvements.
Stormwater management also has an important water-quality component. According to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, runoff from roads, rooftops and other surfaces can carry sediment, nutrients and other pollutants into nearby waterways. Unmanaged runoff can also contribute to erosion and flooding, while properly designed stormwater systems can help protect property, streams and other natural resources.
For Wachapreague, stormwater management has additional significance because of the town’s location along Virginia’s seaside and its close relationship with surrounding creeks, marshes and coastal waters. Developing a long-range plan can give the town a framework for identifying drainage needs and prioritizing projects as funding becomes available.
Virginia has increasingly emphasized comprehensive approaches to stormwater management. State stormwater regulations address both the quantity and quality of runoff, while DEQ guidance encourages communities to consider such issues as localized flooding, erosion, nutrient and sediment pollution and the performance of existing drainage systems.
A formal stormwater plan can also help a locality establish documented infrastructure needs when pursuing state or federal assistance. Virginia’s Stormwater Local Assistance Fund, for example, provides matching grants to local governments for eligible stormwater best-management projects.
The Oct. 8 meeting is scheduled as a rollout of the conceptual framework, meaning the presentation represents an early stage in the planning process rather than a final list of construction projects.
Residents interested in drainage problems, recurring street or property flooding, water quality or future infrastructure improvements are encouraged to attend.
