ONANCOCK, Va. — The Historic Onancock School is competing for a chance to bring a free outdoor music series to town beginning in 2026, thanks to a grant program funded by the Levitt Foundation.
The nonprofit Friends of Onancock School submitted the proposal for Onancock to host the series at the school’s newly built Pavilion. The project has advanced to the public voting phase, which runs through Sept. 15. Residents and supporters are encouraged to cast votes online at levitt.org/vote or by texting ONANCOCK to 877-409-5525. Each individual may vote for up to five proposals nationwide.
The Levitt Foundation, a national social impact funder that backs the largest free outdoor concert series in the United States, created the Levitt Music Series Grants to help communities transform underused public spaces into inclusive destinations. For the 2026–2028 grant cycle, the foundation will award U.S.-based nonprofits up to $120,000 over three years—up to $40,000 annually—to support 7 to 10 free outdoor concerts each summer featuring professional musicians across diverse genres.
If selected, Historic Onancock School would join dozens of Levitt communities across the country that have used live music to spark economic activity, attract visitors, and strengthen local pride.
Winning proposals will be chosen through a combination of public voting and review by the Levitt Foundation. Finalists are expected to be announced later this year.
