The Eastern Shore Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists is now accepting applications for its 2026 fall basic training course, offering local residents an opportunity to become volunteer educators, community scientists and environmental stewards on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The program prepares participants to assist with conservation efforts and public land stewardship throughout Accomack County and Northampton County. According to the organization, chapter members contributed more than 3,000 volunteer hours in 2025 supporting projects focused on natural resource conservation, education and environmental monitoring.
The 10-week training course will run on consecutive Thursdays from Sept. 10 through Nov. 12, 2026. Classes are held all day and include both classroom instruction and field trips designed to highlight the unique ecosystems and wildlife of the Eastern Shore.
Topics covered during the course include coastal ecology, invasive plant species, mammals, migratory birds and other aspects of the region’s natural environment. Completion of the course is required for those wishing to become official members of the chapter.
Organizers say the chapter supports dozens of volunteer projects across the Shore, offering opportunities for individuals with a wide range of interests and backgrounds.
The standard registration fee is $150, though applicants approved for enrollment may choose an alternative fee option based on financial need.
