The Historic Cokesbury Church and Cultural Center is thrilled to present a captivating evening of Broadway show tunes featuring the renowned Alvy Powell, Jr. Known for his powerful performances and rich baritone voice, Alvy Powell, Jr. will delight audiences with selections from “Porgy and Bess” and other beloved Broadway musicals.
Born in Birdnest and raised in Cheriton, Alvy Powell, Jr. is an esteemed American singer of opera and a former member of the U.S. Army Chorus. His illustrious career includes performances for nine American presidents and his acclaimed portrayal of Porgy in George Gershwin’s iconic opera, “Porgy and Bess.”
Master Sgt. Powell held the distinction of being the Army’s oldest enlisted soldier until his retirement in 2017, adding to his remarkable legacy of service and artistry.
