LONG BEACH BLANKET BINGO is an original musical written by James Berg & Stan ZImmerman (writers for Golden Girls & Gilmore Girls,) using music from the catalogue of the late Allee Willis (lyricist/composer of THE COLOR PURPLE, FRIENDS theme, & Earth, Wind, & Fire’s ‘September’), and taking place during the 1960’s, a time when America was going through significant social and political change.
It was a time when America’s coastal resorts still had segregated black beaches, including some very close by. The story at the heart of LONG BEACH BLANKET BINGO is the interracial relationship between two high school seniors, a beautiful black surfer and a white middle-class movie nerd. Their innocent romance sets off controversy amongst their family, friends, and the community of Long Beach, California, circa 1965.
The North Street Playhouse is proud to be presenting the world premiere of this joyful, uplifting musical!
