In a statement to the Cape Charles Mirror, Bayshore Concrete Products Corporation (Skanska) confirmed that it will ending operations at the Cape Charles plant. According the company, Bayshore is finishing its existing current contracts with work expected to go beyond Spring 2018 but not expected to go beyond the end of the year, at this time. Concurrently, Bayshore is actively marketing the plant for sale.
As previously stated, efforts are underway to place as many affected workers as possible by working with local and state workforce development groups, providing workers access to guidance and counseling through the transition process, and utilizing a worker referral program to the plant’s network of partners, vendors and clients for potential employment opportunities.

I am sorry for all those workers that will be laid off, their families and children from the income from that job.
Our corrupt Government of only thinking of themselves and their pockets is to blame together with the County Administrator that had no vision of growth or was it the Board that deliberately rigged the comprehensive plan.
The farmers have to understand our economy is not based on cotton and corn, as most of our produce is coming from other countries we must think of growth I mean plenty of growth, better schools, senior apartments, luxury apartments, a four-year college to top MIT in Mass., a hospital, much more shopping to attract and build a bigger population
I suggest that we merge with Virginia Beach because our board is a buddy-buddy system controlled by the CBES (citizens for a better eastern shore) and they are not doing themselves any good either or the county.
We lose powerful students who can do a much better job of Government work than the current administration after they Graduate High School 90 % leave because of no jobs, no housing, no nightlife, nothing to attract them to stay. Poor planning by the Administrator that is causing families to break up of trying to stay together and help each other in case of need.
We have an old Cape Charles we need is a new Cape Charles to be built on the industrial park that was sold for peanuts, use “Eminent Domain” to take it back.
With our current President Trump lowering the industrial tax rate to compete with the rest of the world our county is just ripe for extream growth, we have, Deepwater port, a major highway, a railroad, an airport (that can be converted to international travel), Gaming for tourist to enjoy, Riverboat for dining and dancing and gaming on board.
For God’s sake, wake up Northampton stop living in the past and join the rest of the world before the train leaves the station.

Posted this is an excellent opportunity to capitalize on future high end development and growth. The plant was stagnant for many years and not continuing a growth curve and did nothing for additional tourism, which is the bread and butter of the eastern shore. We need more visionary developers who want to attract tourists who have money to spend in cape charles. Look at other waterfront communities who have done it right and are thriving towns with excess revenue. Annapolis? Their economy is booming and they don’t have nearly half of the beauty of the shore! Surely there are deep pockets that will help revitalize cape charles and attract real revenue to the shore. Not the little millions, but billions of dollars that is needed to really jumpstart the county and provide tax revenue for a better school system so our kids don’t leave the shore.

Tony speaks words of wisdom. Another election cycle is about to occur in Cape Charles. Will we sheepishly reaffirm the current administration or vote in people who will embrace the opportunity that the economic boom the rest of the country will enjoy.

In my opinion, this closure is another perfect example of our County Supervisors not taking care of The Eastern Shore. THEY get out front and ask/tell us to support the construction of a new CBBT Tunnel. Okay, fine we join the parade and support/allow the idea. You’d think that BEFORE the idea was presented to us, some work would be signed sealed and delivered to come the way of the depressed Eastern Shore. Instead we have a future of less work and more traffic to increase the dangers on the highway. WHY ? Little work came to Bayshore on the tunnel contract and so now it’s for sale and closing.
DEALS are often made to help both sides of a project such as another $800 million tunnel. We got nothing out of this construction. NOTHING. The temp. jobs Bayshore did get a while ago were due to a project up the road in the N.J./N.Y. area. This depressed Shore couldn’t use/doesn’t deserve projects to help us rather than just roll by at 60 m.p.h?
Wake up Supervisors !
I have prior stated I suspect the same is happening in the chicken business. Past history/performance causes those questions to be raised.
The tunnel being constructed is a 3rd in the group. Does anyone out there think there will be a 4th for higher traffic flow after it ?
Hello ! Is anybody home ?
Bailey Ronnie says
Tony Sacco needs to wake up also it not the farmers who do not want growth we are paying some of the highest equipment taxes in the state this all started back when nobody wanted the prison here know look we have no hospital our school system is a wreck who wants to come here
Debbie says
This is true Ronnie they are building houses no one can afford except for the retired people that made their money from other places.
June Richardson says
Not getting the prison was one of many mistakes the County has made.

Amen, Mr. Bailey and Amen Mr. Sacco……….Mr. Bailey, I agree with you that Mr. Sacco needs to change ONE word in his missive……….
Change “Farmers” to either “Liberals”, “Democrats” or “Progressives” -all synonyms for anti-American.
I am still amazed that the area traded a PRISON(TONS of high paying, non-degree’d CAREERS) for what? Poverty and penury.
Rusty Fitzhugh says
I am not sure how long Mr. Sacco has lived on the Eastern Shore, but his argument is nothing new and is basically the same argument used when Brown and Root wanted to do business in the 1970’s. As someone that graduated from Cape Charles High School and moved away, it became very clear that as a young man I had very limited options on the Eastern Shore. As an adult who has not lived on the Eastern Shore in 28 years I would caution Mr. Sacco to “be careful of what you ask for”.
For the government to provide the infrastructure and educational opportunities suggested, the current residents might find themselves no longer in a position to be able to afford to live there. This also occurred in Cape Charles years ago when the amount of taxes that had to be paid by only a few residents was so high that some people made life decisions of where they chose to live. Additionally, the regulation that comes with that type of investment would surely change the lifestyle that folks currently enjoy as local government will have to find more revenue streams to meet the inflated County / Town budgets.
Lastly, just because you build it does not mean they (private business) will come. When business looks at areas to begin operations one of the first areas they review is the local workforce. Since service industry jobs are mostly low wage, business will be looking for a workforce that brings a higher level of education. Most businesses will locate where the workforce meets the business need instead of locating to an area of very high taxes, which would occur if local government builds the required infrastructure. Moving a new workforce to an area is much more expensive and does nothing for the locals except make the cost of living much more expensive and providing them with low paying service industry jobs.
One of the freedoms we enjoy in the United States is that we are free to go and live wherever we choose within our personal financial constraints. Mr. Sacco might find that in either case what he is asking for will come with a sacrifice of living on the Eastern Shore that is now too expensive or living on the Eastern Shore where the lifestyle of rural America is only an option for those with money. Another option for Mr. Sacco may have to be similar to the option I had many years ago, which was if I wanted to provide for myself and have a family, I had to exercise my freedom and go where the work was available.

Well stated.

They gave it away over the last 28 years…they lost their voices to political correctness and put lipstick on a pig. The Shore is in rough shape.
Mike Kuzma, Jr. says
Sir, If the Government is honest and not out for itself(yes, I know I know) a Developers Agreement we executed and HONORED by both parties can defer much of those costs you of which you speak. Furthermore, increased economic activity will lift all boats: increased income for residents, increased tax revenue for the Government.
It shouldn’t be an excuse for stasis.

I was told that the company that won the bid requested help with the project from Bayshore but the Bayshore price was too high. they were encouraged to rebid with a lower price, but the parent company owner of bayshore essentially wanted the bid set an exorbitant amount because they wanted to shut the plant down.

Deregulate, deregulate, deregulate, tax cuts for the wealthy, increased defense spending and cut domestic spending. The same republican formula every time they gain control and every time it comes crashing down. Then the same exact people tell us how great it will be next time. What a joke. The rich get richer and the working class and the working class poor get the bill.
Last year we had the slowest job growth since 2011. The tax cuts didn’t work and now Ryan and others want to come after our social security and Medicare. The economy will tank AGAIN like it did under George W. and you’ll vote for the same republicans again.
I remember when people understood that the Democratic Party represented the working class and the working class poor. Now people have been trained like sheep to vote for the people that will lead them to slaughter. We’re all doomed because people won’t take the time to make an educated vote.
