Wednesday, New York Post reporter Steven Nelson asked the president to respond to allegations that he “interacted” with Hunter Biden’s business associates, citing polling that shows a majority of Americans, including a significant number of Democrats, believe he interacted with his family’s business interests illegally or unethically.
“I’m not going to comment on that,” Biden initially responded, before immediately commenting on the allegations.
“I did not, and it’s just a bunch of lies,” he followed up. “They’re lies. I did not. They’re lies.”
Johnson later responded to Biden’s accusation by asserting Biden — not House Republicans — is the liar.
“The President just lied again to the American people,” Johnson said. “FACT: There are at least 22 examples of Joe Biden speaking with or meeting with Hunter Biden’s foreign business associates.”
The response invokes the growing body of evidence that demonstrates the overlap between President Biden and his son’s business schemes. The evidence, according to the House Oversight Committee, shows how Biden “was involved in his family’s influence peddling schemes, including while he served as Vice President.”
As more of that circumstantial evidence surfaced this past summer, the White House’s narrative about Biden’s alleged involvement change quite a bit.
Previously, Biden maintained that he never discussed any business with his son. But after former Hunter Biden associate Devon Archer testified to House investigators, the White House said Biden “was never in business with his son.”
Sometime in the next week, Johnson is expected to hold a floor vote in the House to open an official impeachment inquiry. The step does not mean the House will impeach Biden.
Rather, it gives House investigators increased power to investigate the allegations of corruption and influence peddling. Republicans argue the step has become necessary because the Biden administration is not cooperating with their investigation willingly.
