VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Today, on the 51st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Democratic Candidate for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District Missy Cotter Smasal condemns the dismantling of freedoms and bodily autonomy by the Dobbs decision. After a century of work by right-wing extremists, the Supreme Court robbed women across America of access to vital reproductive healthcare and privacy. Virginia is the only state in the South that currently protects reproductive rights.
Cotter Smasal is challenging anti-choice extremist Jen Kiggans, who has been outspoken in her support of the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, stating she was “100% unapologetically pro-life” and comparing the procedure to a “hollywood nose job”. Kiggans also voted to strip access to reproductive care for active duty service members.
“My opponent Jen Kiggans supports dangerous House Speaker Mike Johnson, whose extremist agenda is for a national ban on abortion with no exceptions,” said Missy Cotter Smasal, candidate for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District. “Just this past week, Speaker Johnson and anti-choice extremists like Jen Kiggans voted to pass two new anti-abortion measures that would use federal funds to spread misinformation and prevent vulnerable communities from seeking essential reproductive health care. Virginians need leaders who will defend their bodily autonomy and stop politicians from interfering in personal decisions between patients and doctors. If elected, I will always vote to protect abortion rights in the Commonwealth.”
