CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Several key infrastructure and development projects are moving forward in Cape Charles, including downtown streetscape improvements, planning for a new municipal building and workforce housing initiatives, according to an update from Capital Projects Manager Bob Panek.
Work on the first phase of the Mason Avenue Electrical Upgrade continues to show visible progress. Contractors have installed new streetlights along the corridor, with the lights and power pedestals currently operating on temporary power. Full activation is expected once the new electrical panel is energized by the A&N Electric Cooperative.
The project has also included sidewalk improvements, with contractors completing concrete work to ensure a minimum sidewalk width of five feet. In addition, three new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps have been completed on Mason Avenue, including two serving handicap parking spaces and one at the Strawberry Street crosswalk. Officials said a short section of electrical circuitry still needs to be rerouted, with that work expected to be completed next week.
Planning for the town’s proposed municipal building is also advancing. The town issued two addenda to its Invitation for Bids in response to contractor questions regarding construction drawings and specifications. The deadline for bid submissions has been extended from May 22 to June 9 because of the Memorial Day holiday period. Town officials said they anticipate receiving proposals from as many as eight contractors.
Meanwhile, town staff have begun preliminary work with the developer selected for Cape Charles’ proposed workforce housing project. The effort marks the first steps toward negotiating a development agreement that will outline project requirements and responsibilities for both parties.
Panek also reported that the town is working with its financial advisory firm to evaluate funding options for a six-year capital improvement plan that will guide future infrastructure investments.
At the Cape Charles Memorial Library, exterior renovation work is nearing completion. Repairs and painting have been completed on the building’s north and east walls, while nine broken windowpanes have been replaced and window frames repainted as part of the ongoing redevelopment project.
The updates reflect continued investment in public infrastructure, accessibility improvements and long-term planning efforts aimed at supporting growth and enhancing public facilities throughout Cape Charles.
