Cape Charles, Va -In a recent regular meeting of the Historic District Review Board held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, several Certificate of Appropriateness applications were reviewed and approved, marking progress in preserving and enhancing the architectural heritage of the community.
Among the applications considered were:
505 Harbor Avenue: The board approved the construction of a 240 sq. ft. second-floor deck on the rear of a two-story single-family dwelling, recognizing its compatibility with the historic character of the area.
543 Mason Avenue: Approval was granted for various renovations on a two-story single-family dwelling, including the replacement of front metal door with a new wood 4-pane/1-panel door, the installation of custom-fabricated windows, replacement of the existing mailbox, and the rebuilding of a rear metal lean-to roof on an existing accessory structure. Additionally, the application included plans for a shell driveway and relocation of an existing fence.
644 Monroe Avenue: The board approved the replacement of the existing slate roof with a new slate roof on a two-story single-family dwelling, as well as the replacement of the existing tin/metal roof with copper on the one-story side wings. Furthermore, plans to add a copper cap to the chimney were also given the green light.
114 Pine Street: Despite being an exception to guidelines, the installation of a 3′ vinyl picket fence in the front and side yard, along with a 6′ vinyl privacy fence in the rear yard, was approved due to extenuating circumstances and prior approval.
Tax Map #83A1-1-58 B & 59B on Plum Street: The construction of a new 1,449 sq. ft. two-story single-family dwelling with various outdoor amenities including a front porch, door landings, patio, and an outdoor shower, received approval from the board.
210 Tazewell Avenue: The board approved renovations on this property with conditions, including the replacement of shingle roof, siding, trim boards, and windows. Notably, the condition stipulated that door muntins could be removable but must be on the outside of the glass.
