The Mirror received this note in the mail, and we totally agree with it. We did try and meet with some teachers for the article, but we could not work out the timing. Also, the article was running over at around 2000 words, so we decided to treat teacher’s views and perspective in a separate article. That said, please contact the Mirror at capecharlesmirror@gmail.com. As always, all conversations are kept confidential and no names will ever be used. We understand how it is.
96.5 WCTG helps Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company
96.5 CTG, WOW 101.5 and a handful of community-focused businesses created a PonyVision video providing detailed information as well as past video and pictures from Pony Swims of the last 91 years to help guide tourists for this year’s events. As part of that project, each business also contributed to a $2,000 donation made to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company’s new building fund. Skip Dixon and Greg Bojko from GSB Media presented the donation check to Denise Bowden of the Fire Company on stage at the Firemen’s Carnival on Pony Swim night.
State Water Control Board rejects Tyson’s pollution consent order
The State Water Control Board voted 4-1 on July 19 to reject a consent order with Tyson Foods for pollution violations at their poultry processing plant in Temperanceville. The original set of recommendations were handed down by the Department of Environmental Quality.
Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper Executive Director Jay Ford testified at the hearing, stating that that the civil penalties, $26,160, for exceeding permitted pollutant levels in treated stormwater and wastewater was not enough to act as a deterrent.
The board agreed and instructed DEQ staff levy larger fine and come up with a more stringent maintenance plan.
DEQ will be meeting with Tyson to negotiate a revised consent order.
“Yesterday, the Water Control Board agreed with Shorekeeper that the status quo is not good enough. Our Consent Orders must serve as an actual deterrent, and must result in cleaner waters, or they fail to do their job. We thank them for their service to Virginia and our waterways, and look forward to working with them in the future.” -Shorekeeper Executive Director, Jay Ford.
A Better Deal for America, and such a Deal it is!
Special to the Cape Charles Mirror by Paul Plante
Yes, people, a “BETTER DEAL” for America and the American people, and who in their right mind can be against that!
And we should all take a moment here to pause and reflect on how lucky and blessed and special and exceptional we are that we live in a country where you can get a “BETTER DEAL” than the other guy is offering.
If we lived in Russia, for example, with its state-run economy, there simply would not be a chance for a “BETTER DEAL,” for it would be the same deal wherever you went.
And people, and when you look at what you get with this “BETTER DEAL,”, a cheeseburger for the price of a hamburger, with a thick shake and biggy fries thrown in for free, you’ll be saying to yourself, this isn’t a better deal, this is a great deal, and in American politics today, with someone now in the White House who got there based on the art of the deal, that is what it is now all about – who has the better deal.

DMV releases interactive crash locations map
The Virginia DMV recently unveiled an interactive crash locations map.
The accident map can be filtered by type, cause and severity throughout an entire locality, or down to a single street anywhere in the Commonwealth.
“Educating drivers is an important part of crash prevention,” DMV Commisioner Richard D. Holcomb said in a press release. “This new feature allows Virginians to see where crashes occur most in their neighborhoods and the factors causing those crashes. With this information, you might use extra caution when traveling through a particular intersection or remind a new driver of the hazards of driving at an unsafe speed on a road near your home where speed-related crashes happen regularly.”
Cape Charles Sponsoring Back to School Supply Drive Challenge
The 2017-2018 school is just around the corner, and soon teachers will be entering the classroom, preparing for another school year. The county can provide much of the services needed for students and teachers, however it can’t provide all the supplies and items needed to get classrooms ready for the upcoming school year.
The Town of Cape Charles is holding a back to school supply drive to collect items that will help students and teachers in Northampton start off on the right foot. This year, the town is sponsoring one full classroom, and they are challenging other businesses and organizations to do the same. Just sponsoring one classroom can really help our schools.

President in Norfolk to Commission USS Gerald R. Ford
The USS Gerald R. Ford, a CNV 78 aircraft carrier was completed five months ago. The carrier boasts nearly two dozen new technologies not present on older carriers – including a more spacious flight deck, an electromagnetic aircraft launch system and advanced arresting gear to better recover incoming aircraft.
Saturday, President Trump was in Norfolk for U.S. Navy’s commissioning of the Ford.
“For the rest of your lives,” President Trump said to the crew, “you’ll be able to tell your friends and family that you served on greatest ship in the U.S. Navy and, in my opinion, the greatest ship in the world. American steel and American hands have constructed a 100,000-ton message to the world that American might is second to none.”
“For those in the world who wish to terrorize us here in the U.S. and abroad, those who wish to challenge our shores, those who challenge our values…,” Admiral John Richardson said, “this is not a day of celebration for them. This is their worst nightmare.”
Capt. Richard McCormack will serve as the Ford’s first commanding officer.

The Local starts GoFundMe Campaign
In 2016 top chef Jason Van Marter took up residence in the former Cheriton establishment Paul’s, renting the cafe counter space and creating the one of the most innovative, artistic, fresh and sustainable menus on the Eastern Shore, The Local.
Success is always a good thing, but the growth and popularity of The Local means it’s time to expand. Chef Jason is in need of several updates, and would like to expand The Local by serving beer and wine as well as opening up for dinner service.
To help the process, The Local has started a GoFundMe campaign which hopes to raise $50k for the renovations.
The Local is asking for assistance so that they can renovate the old kitchen space in the back of the building:
-Refinish existing walls
-Update Plumbing and Electric
-Repair hood exhaust and fire supression
-Add equipment to increase onsite services as well as catering
-Place a small aquaponics system to provide fresh produce all year long
They would also like to remodel the inside dining area to provide more efficient services:
-Add gas line and equipment to counter
-Build a separate bar area for beverage services
-Update lighting to provide a better ambiance experience
Then to provide more means for people to find The Local and assist the county in the drive to build upon tourism on the Shore:
-Add website with online store
-Create and print marketing materials such as rack cards to be placed at locations throughout the Shore
-Add signage on the highway to help drive people into Cheriton
They would also like to:
-Add to their catering profile and useful equipment to accommodate events
-Participate more in community events and help to grow them
-Assist the Town of Cheriton with their community events to help bring awareness to the town and revive a once flourishing community. #cheritonrevival
With renovation and expansion The Local will be able to offer more catering operations as well as work with the town and county to provide services and help expand charity events.
