Industrial Poultry operations are exploding across the Delmarva Peninsula, directly affecting Virginia’s Eastern Shore. With a need to proceed with independent, in-depth, and science-based data, Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore is presenting a “Community Impacts of Industrial Poultry Operations” forum Wed., January 20, from 6 to 8 PM at Broadwater Academy, Exmore.
From previous decades, Accomack County has seen a major shift in its poultry industry with a large increase in the number of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations [CAFOs], along with the size, density, and bird count. Northampton County will be impacted as well, be it through the introduction of poultry houses, and/or the spreading of poultry litter on county fields.
“This Shore-wide issue will be ongoing and the ramifications to our citizens will be felt for generations to come,” said CBES Executive Director Donna Bozza. “We are fortune to have an expert panel assembled to examine environmental, health, and safety-related issues associated with Industrial Poultry operations.”
The forum will be moderated by Peabody Award-Winner, Marc Steiner, and broadcast on his regional radio talk show, The Marc Steiner Show.
The Industrial Poultry Forum panel includes Mark Brush, Associate Professor of Marine Science-Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Roger Everton, VA DEQ, Manager, Water Compliance and Monitoring, Jillian P. Fry, PhD, MPH, Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Adam James, Town of Onancock Fire Chief, Carole Morrison, former Industrial Poultry grower, now small-scale farm grower, Maria Payan, Consultant, Socially Responsible Agricultural Project, Margaret Sanner, VA Asst. Director and Senior Attorney, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Neil Zahradka, VA DEQ, Manager, Office of Land Applications Programs.
A Question & Answer period will follow this free presentation. All are welcome.
CBES will provide an audio for public officials and citizens immediately after the Forum.
A podcast will also be available after The Marc Steiner Show broadcasts the shows. Tentative dates are January 28 and February 24.
The Forum will be held at Broadwater Academy, 3500 Broadwater Road, Exmore, VA. For more information info@cbes.org, 757-678-7157. www.cbes.org “Community Impacts of Industrial Poultry Operations” is part of CBES “Inform & Empower the Shore” Series.
