    1. EMS are the ones who declare a victim or patient deceased. They are usually on scene along with law enforcement or arrive first. A coroner or medical examiner is only called to a scene if it is suspicious or other extenuating circumstances.

    2. Since forever! A person is considered injured until EMS says otherwise. It would be crazy to call the corner if they are still breathing.

  1. Please tell me why I was reading the mirror last night and I seen the post about the woman in bay creek who didn’t get a DUI going 70 in a 25. She had to get airlifted. Now the whole post is gone…coverup ?

Editor’s Note: Kimberly, yes, we pulled the story for now. Due to the fatalilty of our friend, we decided not run it at this time. We have not forgotten about though.

    1. Personally, I can’t stand chief Pruitt. I find him very unprofessional.
But to say there was a cover up. Before the facts are known. Especially when someone was airlifted after a serious accident.
Well, that’s just not right. Don’t jump to conclusions. Who cares if it was a DUI. It’s all pointless. Do you think the family cares about a charge?
When people jump to conclusions about their police force, it means the people have lost trust in the police. Chief Pruitt brought all this on himself.
      And now a fatal shooting?
I guess the people expect more from their high price police officers.
Hell, I’m still waiting to hear about the excessive force by the two CC officers on the female who was arrested.
Just another sh!t show in Cape Charles. Tourist beware!

      1. High price police officer? You’re joking right? Have you seen the starting salary for Chincoteague? Or Virginia State Police, compared to Cape Charles? People have been complaining about police for years, yet there is a shortage thru out the country. Perhaps all of you would like to apply.

        1. Prince William County police starting paid is $62,000
          Virginia state police $56,000.
          Cape Charles Police officers $50,000
Yes! Cape Charles police are extremely over paid!!
          Explain your reasoning.
Prince William county and the VSP cover a hell’ve lot more and do a hell’ve more than Cape Charles police!
And they have 24 hour service! Does Cape Charles?

          1. Nope! Let’s focus on facts State Police starting salary is 56k for trainees, 60,000 after the first year. Compare that to Chincoteague PD, or better yet Eastville who doesn’t have 24 hour coverage. Compare calls for service, and arrest. When you have all that comeback and we can discuss whether they are overpaid or not!

    2. I certainly hope that accident in Bay Creek is looked into. I extremely sorry about the seriousness of her injuries but this is not just about a pine tree. Someone’s family could have been in a golf cart going home.

  2. This police response should greatly please our good friend J Wheaton who thinks Cape Charles is becoming more and more like East Baltimore, as this press release makes clear it is becoming, with people being shot dead in broad daylight.

Next thing we know, dance hall girls will be the evening treat in Cape Charles, while empty cartridges and blood line the gutters of the street and men are shot down for the sake of fun or just to hear the noise of their 44 guns.

  3. I have notice that when anything is published that doesn’t favor the Cape Charles Police dept or Chief Pruitt. This site removes the article or the comments.
Why? Isn’t that censorship? Isn’t it up to the reader to form their own opinions and not editor.
It sounds like this site is trying to sway a one-sided opinion that is favorable to the town.
I have also notice, that the Cape Charles Mirror is reporting a lot more outside of the Eastern Shore. Why?
    Just asking.

Editor’s Note: We did pull one article temporarily, out of respect for the shooting in this article. You will see it next week, and we do feel it is important. We just wanted to wait on it. The Mirror has always reported on issues outside of the Shore. We have close ties with several State agencies, and few Federal Environment ones–we feel that information is also important to get out to the public.

    1. Why?

Because the Cape Charles Mirror, which is read around the world via the internet, thanks to Al Gore who invented it, the internet, not the world, is about far more than just the Eastern Shore, and has been for years now.

  4. I’d just like to say that one of the officers suspended for excessive force is back on duty. You’ll find his name in a recent article.

    1. What officer? You want to speak about facts and accuracy? Give the name. You seem to have access to information that we don’t have. Perhaps you should write an article.
