In letter to House Agriculture Committee, Rep. Luria advocates for the “untapped potential” of the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission (SCRC)
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, Congresswoman Elaine Luria called on the House Agriculture Committee to hold a hearing to improve rural development by examining the benefit of regional commissions.
“The Southeast Crescent Regional Commission (SCRC) was authorized and funded by Congress to assist with rural development in coastal communities, including Virginia’s Eastern Shore,” said Congresswoman Elaine Luria. “We can and must do more to support rural development. This hearing would raise awareness to the changing needs of rural communities, rural commissions, and bring to light the untapped potential of the SCRC.”
In the 2008 Farm Bill, Congress authorized the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission to serve parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. In Fiscal Year 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act, $1 million was provided in funding for the SCRC. All that is needed to activate the Commission in 2021 is for President Biden to appoint a federal co-chair to lead the SCRC, who is then approved by the Senate.
