Cape Charles, VA – In a regular meeting held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the Historic District Review Board (HDRB) convened to review several Certificate of Appropriateness applications for construction projects within the historic district. The meeting, which commenced at 5:00 p.m., addressed a range of proposals aimed at preserving the architectural integrity of the area while accommodating modern upgrades.
Among the applications reviewed were:
- 535 Jefferson Avenue: Approval was granted for the construction of a 131.2 sq. ft. rear deck, installation of a 16 sq. ft. outdoor shower on the deck, and installation of a 144 sq. ft. paver patio with a pergola cover.
- 122 Peach Street: The Board approved the removal of an existing 168.6 sq. ft. one-story addition and the construction of a new 162.6 sq. ft. two-story addition on the south side of the single-family dwelling. This addition will include a new 21.7 sq. ft. side porch with steps. Additionally, the proposal to replace existing front porch steps and railing with historically correct wood steps, turned wood newel posts, and pickets received approval. However, the issue regarding the rear patio’s zoning compliance is yet to be addressed.
- 612 Pine Street: Approval was granted for the replacement of 2 double-hung vinyl windows with double-hung vinyl windows featuring muntins (grills) in-between the glass. Furthermore, the proposal to replace an existing wooden fence with a new wooden picket fence on the rear of the property was approved. The Board made an exception to the guidelines for the windows.
- 614 Pine Street: The application to replace 6 double-hung vinyl windows with muntins (grills) in-between the glass with like windows was approved, also as an exception to the guidelines.
- 110 Tazewell Avenue: Modifications to previously approved front porch steps and side porch steps to incorporate wrought iron or aluminum railing were approved. Additionally, the proposal to extend the driveway pavers to the back of the house and continue with shells to the alley received approval.
In addition to the regular meeting, a special meeting of the HDRB has been called for Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will take place on-site at 645 Mason Avenue to review a commercial application for a bank. Subsequently, the Board will convene at Strawberry Plaza to review proposed improvements on the common space by Cape Charles Main Street.
Seems like if you own property here you only get approved if you don’t live here. Everyone of these addresses have owners with “care of” addresses elsewhere. 612 and 614 only both got approved because both have the same owner.
