With Hurricane Matthew approaching the Atlantic Coast, Smitty has some suggestions for boat owners.
1. Always put out extra lines, when doing so, make sure all lines leading in the same direction have equal tension.
2. Always make sure Batteries are fully charged.
3. Always when checking your boat, take a partner.
4. Always make sure you have a fully charged flash light with extra batteries, power will probably be lost.
5. Remember, if it can move, it will!! Tie it down
6. Remove all loose stuff from docks.
7. When unsure ask your dock master for assistance.
8. Trailer boats, if being kept outside you can do two things. 1. screw 4 to 6 ground anchors on both sides of the boat, use ratchet straps to secure the boat to the ground, pull the plugs to allow rain to drain. (Preferred) 2. if your boats has no electronics you can simply fill your boat with water and the weight should hold her in place.
