ES Artists Guild Member Guy Shover needs help after a fire destroyed his workshop, as well as his tools and equipment, and many tangible pieces. On September 4th, Guy was curing some molds that afternoon and while in the house, the barn where the workshop was located caught fire and burned to the ground.
“It was a hot fire,” says Guy. “I lost a lifetime of work—it all burned up…The days after the disaster were devastating; I was in total shock, but right away, decided to rebuild; I talked to my clients to advise them that their commissions will have to wait a bit.”
Rebuilding Guy’s shop is urgent, affecting his life, friends, and local Eastern Shore art in general.
Guy Shover has been a resident of the Eastern Shore of VA since 1989. His bronze sculptures and wood carvings vary from whimsical characteristic mice to realistic portrayals of the magnificent wildlife found on the ESVA and beyond. What Guy finds most enjoyable is seeing the abstract forms in nature and manipulating them to create a unique, one-of-a-kind bronze sculpture through the Lost Wax Method. In addition, Guy is a master at transforming forgotten salvaged wood into original carvings. For the past twenty-eight years, Guy has been employed as a Foundry technician and currently as a Master Patineur for William H. Turner and Dave H. Turner at Turner Sculpture Gallery and Foundry in Melfa, VA.

Right now, Guy is working hard at creating a series of new wooden sculptures, since he lost the molds for his bronzes, and we are happy he will be part of our upcoming Studio Tour. But sometimes, when we are faced with major challenges, we need a little help in life. So right after the fire, Guy’s dear friend Jorge Díaz-Herrera, former president of a small liberal arts college in upstate New York, started a fundraiser to help him rebuild his burned-down workshop and studio in Clam, in the back creeks of Virginia’s beautiful Eastern Shore.
