  1. Omega Protiens’s process is archaic, inefficient (compared to other processors) and so wasteful that a reduction catch limits might actually be beneficial to their bottom line. The spills are not an accident. They are a result of a careless and wasteful business model.

  2. This is not the first time Canadian seafood giant Cooke Aquaculture Inc. (Omega Protiens parent company) nets have had major problems:

“Net pen facilities are expected to withstand high tidal movement for this reason. In their own Fish Escape Plan, Cooke Aquaculture assures the State that the Cypress Island pens are able to withstand strong currents, a claim which has proven false.”

And the State of Washington just banned them from them operating their net pens in state waters because of sloppy practices that put other fish species at risk:

“Since 2016, all of the net pens in Washington’s marine waters have been owned by the same company — New Brunswick, Canada-based seafood giant Cooke Aquaculture. In a statement earlier this week, after the state said it would terminate the company’s remaining leases in Puget Sound, the company said it was disappointed.”

The Virginia Assembly has created an exclusive or special right to the Menhaden fishery for Omega which excludes all other Virginians.

Hopefully, our state leaders will protect our commonly owned natural marine resources for the maximun benefit of the People of Virgina.

  3. It is crabpot bait. What would you have Waterman use? The beloved chicken that you people eat 5-6 times a week, but want them to be raised in someone else’s back yard? Fools one and all.
