Letter: Looking Forward to new YMCA

March 8, 2020 by Wayne Creed 9 Comments

I am writing in response to the article titled Land Purchased for new YMCA in Cape Charles Published in your newspaper on March 1st, 2020. As a member of this extremely small town, I want to input my excitement for such a large facility to be added to the area. I think in such a small town with little happening, especially in the winter, there can be seasons of loneliness. Simple things like walks or trips to food lion can feel dreadful as they are washed up in the mundane of everyday life.

Building a YMCA is going to bring many positive factors into the town of Cape Charles. With the lack of chain restaurants and companies, I think this will be a great chance to open up job opportunities for locals.

The only gym I know of is the one in Bay Creek, which is probably challenging for the people who live in town and aren’t members. In addition, I believe the social aspect of adding a YMCA facility will be a tremendous change for the community.

I imagine the bonds that can be formed through everyday workouts, teams, classes and more. Society as a whole will grow together in small ways that will produce a huge outcome.

The interdependence from what’s going on inside the building will expand outward into the community and bring solidarity to society as a whole.

I too look forward to the new Y. I hope they change their plans and add an indoor pool, however. We have a beach for spring, summer and fall, and really don’t need an outdoor pool. Winter doesn’t offer us much regarding swimming, and an indoor pool would do that. I hope they see their way clear to adding an indoor pool before too long.

I’m sure the indoor pool idea will be considered when budget can allow.

Surrounded by water, they pay to soak in bleach.

Very well said! Glad to see excitement build around an organization that brings people together rather than keeping people out.

I hope those in positions of authority consider reduced rates for seniors or people on limited income. Having a healthy affordable place to go on those long dreary winter nights would benefit may people in the area.

If this one is part of the South Hampton Roads YMCA group, as the one in Onley is, then 2 adults is $78 per month which may shut out a number of Shore residents.

That is $4,680.00, over a five year spread, that people are paying someone else to exert physical energy. That seems Back-Asswards. I have been payed for every drop of energy I ever exerted. The work out craze followed the water bottles. What a trip.

        Stay hydrated now, you hear?
