Northampton County Parks and Recreation Board begins National Parks and Recreation “Fund Your Park” campaign to upgrade and renovate the gymnasium at the old middle school in Machipongo.
The Parks Department relies on use of the middle school building for many of its recreational activities, such as the basketball league, which provides over 200 participants with a community place to play. The floor in the school gym needs refinishing. At this time, the Board of Supervisors has not been able to allocate the funds for the work, and Parks and Rec is concerned the gym may have to be shut down because of liability concerns.
The basketball programs among other programs sponsored by Northampton County Parks and Recreation offer programs that are open to all walks of life and have proven very popular with the area’s youth. These programs are in danger of being terminated because of legal concerns about the state of the gym playing floor. The county currently has 1,507 participants and spectators throughout the year that are involved with the Northampton County Parks and Recreation programs. This could all go if someone gets hurt playing on the gym floor which has lost most of its finish and is very slippery.

Thanks Wayne. It is a very worthwhile cause where we can leverage a fairly small amount of money to provide healthy, fun activities for our community. Every little bit helps. Please don’t hesitate to make a donation, even if it is for $10. We need all the help we can get.
