The confederate monument that has stood on the Eastville Green for over one hundred years was taken down on Thursday.
The Monument, guns, cannonballs, and other artifacts are scheduled to be stored at the County’s Facilities Management Shop in Eastville.
The firm overseeing the removal is Stratified, Inc., a Washington DC firm that provides “environmental and construction services.” The price tag for the removal is $39,000.
The future of the monument is uncertain. According to the County, there are no plans regarding where the monument will be located.

Scotiagirl girl comments that they might as well have taken down the flag pole…it will be next.

scotiagirl, I prefer to think of it as just making room for statues of heroes of the next civil war – maybe you agree
Scotiagirl says
Scotiagirl hadn’t thought of that but you may be right! And the way things are going we may need the space sooner than we’d like…

You can remove statues until the end of time but it is NOT going to change history! People coming together for the good of mankind can change the future and create history for future generations!!
As far as Northampton County goes, there so many more necessities in our County that $39,000 would have really helped. Our middle school aged children need a school, the high school is in great need of repair and new construction, and we spend $39,000 to take down a statute! Taxpayers had no say in this but our dollars paid for it! When does it end?

They couldn’t even find a Virginia Contaractor? The maitainence workers that are already paid by the county couldnt do it?
Better check with the Black Community Leaders…

Pam. w, Scotiagirl thanks you for putting this in perspective! Wonder what else they plan to do with “other people’s money”?
Pam W. says
Exactly! Bet we won’t have any say on the next project either! The Board of Supervisors serve the people of Northampton County. Where else do you find people working for you spending your money and not asking?
My grandfather used to say “YOU WILL NEVER MOVE FORWARD IF YOU KEEP LOOKING BACK!

Marcus Garvey said it better and more correctly:
‘A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.’
