The official deadline to file the federal income tax return always seems to sneak up on me, like this year. Yes, it’s supposed to be April 15 — unless something interferes with that timing, such as because April 15 falls on a holiday. Under a special rule, whenever a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a legal holiday, it’s moved to the next business day.
This year, it is April 18 in 2017. You have until October 16, 2017 if you file a request for an extension on or before that date.
