The social and economic context of a murdered Iowa girl

Americans put a price on crime in this country. In Norfolk, we know some neighborhoods are more violent than others. We know some things we do are riskier than others. A risk-free life, we know, does not exist. Crime happens.

But when things like the Parkland shooting or the murder of Mollie Tibbetts happens, the calculus changes. Not just rage against the criminal who committed the crime but also at a system that failed and allowed the tragedy to happen. We are justified in our anger when someone like Nikolas Cruz, a mentally unfit person purchases a gun–and there were plenty of warning signs to stop him.
And we are also justified in our anger when the government does not enforce existing law when officials make the affirmative decision to do all they can to frustrate or defy existing law.

The murderer of Mollie Tibbetts or Kate Steinle wasn’t supposed to be here. They were illegal aliens that broke the law to be here.

Immigration is a good thing, it is one of our country’s true strengths. But, we have borders, and let’s rationally decide the number of people we want in the country. As a policy, it should not include people with known criminal histories.

America is a violent place, and we know legal citizens do a fine job of committing violent crimes. But for immigration, there is a difference between doing due diligence and no diligence at all.

But, the rest of the story….

We don’t yet know for sure if Mr. Rivera is guilty of killing Mollie Tibbetts, but the way many people see it, if a foreign national, apparently in the country illegally, kills an American citizen, it bolsters Trump’s message of putting Americans first. The murder of Mollie Tibbetts was not just heinous, it was unnecessary and utterly preventable by government action.

Some supporters of immigration reform seem completely tone deaf, don’t seem to be able to acknowledge the material reality of Tibbetts’ murder. Senator Elizabeth Warren, rather than admit during a CNN interview that our failure to enforce our immigration laws and control the border contributed to Tibbetts’ death, she changed the subject.  After saying that she was “so sorry for the family here,” Warren argued that “we need an immigration system that is effective, that focuses on where real problems are,” in effect casting those crossing the border illegally as the “real” victims. CNN’s Chris Cuomo somehow found a way to use the Tibbett’s killing to attack Trump.

Pro-immigration Republicans like Paul Ryan and Jeff Flake are also damaged. Callous disregard for families like the Tibbettses is one of the reasons that President Trump’s talk about immigration reform resonates with many Americans. Trump remains one of the only national leaders of either party to address major social, political and economic issues that many Americans consider of the utmost importance.

This is why the Tibbetts case matters not only because of the murder, but because of its social and economic context.

Build the wall, strengthen our immigration laws. No one comes into the USA unless they do it legally. Period.

Chris Cuomo, brother of Young Andy, governor of New York, does not come across as being very intelligent, or capable of rational thought, but in several polls, female viewers thought he was very pretty to look at so his job seems secure, anyway.

According to The Wrap article “Chris Cuomo Boosts CNN’s Primetime Ratings by Double Digits in First 2 Months – Cuomo is up more than 30 percent in the demo and overall from Anderson Cooper’s time at the helm of 9 p.m. by Jon Levine on August 8, 2018, being considered pretty has been a huge asset for Chris Cuomo and CNN, as follows:

CNN’s high hopes for Chris Cuomo in primetime are showing signs of paying off with the show and its anchor making impressive gains in the notoriously tricky 9 p.m. timeslot.

In June, the month of his debut, Cuomo drew 1.129 million total viewers and 370,000 in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 year-old news demographic.

    end quotes

Which goes to prove that in show bidness, you can make it big time with an empty head, as long as the empty head is considered a pretty head, and that is how that story goes.

Chris Cuomo graduated from Yale and then obtained a law degree from Fordham. He’s hardly just a pretty face.

He’s hardly a pretty face at all in my opinion, Susan, but hey, that is just me.

He’s got that same hang-dog expression his father Mario, the Hamlet on the Hudson had, and to me, with my tastes, which in America, as you know, do not have to be your tastes, since you have your own liberty of conscience separate and apart from mine, that is not pretty at all.

But if you want to think he is a pretty face, go for it, and I’ll have your back for you, even if I don’t agree with you that Chris Cuomo is a pretty face on TV, which is a requirement of being on TV these days – you have to be photogenic!

And what does graduating from Yale and then obtaining a law degree from Fordham have to do with anything, pray tell?
