Special Report by Coach Terry Flynn
Northampton fielded four pole vaulters this year. The Jackets did very well in a very crowded field of 24 jumpers . Forest Flynn won his first indoor championship, and third state title overall, with a State Indoor Record of 14-1. It was his second best jump of his career; he jumped 14-4 earlier in January at the International Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada. Tyrease placed 15th; Alphonso Godwin 16th; and Liam Flynn 17th; all with jumps of 8-6. It was a real treat to see four Jackets on the runway. (And, on personal note, two Flynns.) Below is Forest’s record setting jump at 14-1.
Coach Oliver Bennett brought a small, but high achieving team. Sophomore JyAsia Savage took fourth in the 55m dash. She is one to watch for the future. On the boys’ side, Junior Shamar Johnson placed 12th in the 55m dash prelims, and the 4×200 team of Shamar Johnson, Jaquan Langston, Kobe Lyons and Tyrease Harris took 10th place. Sophomore standout Tyrease Harris had a busy day, placing 7th in the 55m hurdles, 15th in the pole vault and was also on the aforementioned 4×200 relay. An ankle injury over the first hurdle in the finals kept him from being his absolute best, but he toughed it out and continued to compete in the other events.
