BOSTON — NOAA Fisheries has granted an incidental harassment authorization (IHA) to Vineyard Wind 1, LLC, allowing the company to incidentally harass marine mammals during the completion of construction activities for the Vineyard Wind 1 Offshore Wind Project. The project is located in the northern portion of Lease Area OCS-A 0501, offshore of Massachusetts.
This ruling affects species including the North Atlantic right whale, humpback whale, fin whale, minke whale, common dolphin, and bottlenose dolphin.
The IHA permits Vineyard Wind to take marine mammals by Level A and Level B harassment, covering a range of species that may be affected by the construction process. This includes species like the North Atlantic right whale, humpback whale, fin whale, minke whale, and several dolphin species, such as the common dolphin and bottlenose dolphin.
NOAA Fisheries emphasized that the authorization sets strict limits on the extent of harassment allowed and requires the company to implement mitigation measures to reduce impacts on marine life. These include monitoring marine mammal activity and implementing shutdowns of construction activities if certain species are detected in the area.
The authorization is valid for a limited time and applies specifically to the construction phase of the project.
