A Mirror reader submitted the following:
On 2/15/24 there was a very serious motor vehicle accident in the Bay Creek community. A vehicle hit a tree at a high rate of speed. The person was airlifted to the hospital with very serious injuries. It is suspected that the driver was intoxicated after leaving the Coach House. The driver did not receive a DUI… If you live behind the gates are you not liable for your actions? I’m just looking for some answers. If this had been me or you would the circumstances be different?
The Mirror attempted to gather information from the town, but little was being offered. We were told that there were “extenuating circumstances involved here”, and since the investigation is still in progress, they are unable to discuss the details.
At this time, no charges have been filed in the incident.
The following is another note sent from a reader:
As you probably have heard, some citizens are not thrilled with some of the recent police involvements. Still trying to sift through it all…It is a large force for a community of this size. Based on the most recent census data and the 2024 approved budget, the community pays $770 per resident for police. This is an astronomical number, up there with Baltimore, Wilmington, and DC. The per capita ratio is equally skewed. It results in more frequent officer-initiated interaction (as opposed to 911 or community-initiated), which as we are witnessing, is not always positive.
Is this citizen’s concerns valid? Is the CCPD too big for this small village?
The Mirror will continue to monitor the Bay Creek incident and will provide information as it becomes available.

The entire Cape Charles Police Department should be disbanded.
CD says
Who will answer your calls for service Adam? You wanna talk about why you’re so angry? How is your arm doing?
CD says
Per resident? Half the town is tourists, the reader is comparing tow different things. Compare it to Eastville which is a town over, compare it to chincoteague, crazy that he is comparing Cape Charles to DC. Comical almost ! Compare it to Lon’s Angeles and New city at this point! Why a ridiculous argument to make.

Let me preface this with, I think the police force in Cape Charles is FANTASTIC and we are lucky to have them. The problem we have is you need a much larger force in-season vs off-season. We can’t expect to keep good officers if they get laid off each year because the tourist are gone! Maybe in off-season the police should step up patrols in Bay Creek, since there seems to be a larger population in Bay Creek than in the historic district in the winter months. Off season the historic district is empty! I believe the police department gets it’s direction from the council and the council is all about protecting Cape Charles’ reputation and that of Bay Creek.
I feel bad for this driver who was severely injured in this accident, but if she was drunk she should be charged with a DUI or at least reckless endangerment. If the car is less than 20 years old it has a computer which should have captured her speed at impact. Some are saying the speed was over 60 mph. That speed would make sense with the injuries and the damage to the vehicle.
If Bay Creek’s Coach House over served this driver, shouldn’t the Coach House be held responsible for any damages? Maybe the Coach House should start hosting AA meetings!
What is Bay Creek doing for the safety of its residents or guest? How do you slow people down on those small roads?
It seems Bay Creekers feel it is perfectly fine to drive drunk behind the Golden gates or even in town. Haven’t multiple Bay Creekers been charged with a dui while driving a golf cart over the last few years?
This incident happened around 7 pm, what if it was summer and the streets were full of golfcarts and pedestrians? What if this had happened on Mason at 7 pm in July?
It is just the same old song & dance, the town of Cape Charles protecting its image and its precious Bay Creek at the expense of the safety of its citizens.
This incident didn’t even make the Town’s activity report!

Bay Creek’s Mom says
You seem very angry with Bay Creek. Very, very angry.
How has Bay Creek hurt you?
Paul Plante says
Hi, Mom!
You sound nice.
Bay Creek is lucky then to have you as its Mom, instead of somebody else.
Phil Connors WPBH says
As a Bay Creek mom I bet you’re happy that it was a tree that was hit at that speed and not your kid!
Don’t drive angry!
Sgt. Jockamo Rasputin USMC says
I have never had a problem with CCPD. Nice folks. All in all, a good crew.
Some folks just do not like cops.
Especially the ones who get ticketed in Eastville….

Under the APPARENT circumstances(*) this accident took place, it should have been routine procedure for a blood alcohol test to be administered. If one wasn’t then it should be explained why the exception and if one was done and they “failed” then there should be charges filed.
(*) High rate of speed in a very short distance; alleged drinking at the Coach House immediately beforehand; person had to be airlifted because of the seriousness of her injuries.
