In last week’s edition of the Mirror, we published an article about smoking marijuana on Cape Charles Beach. The overwhelming number of comments we received were in favor of allowing folks to toke up on the beach. Many of the points citizens made were valid–their arguments proved this writer wrong and completely changed his mind. If others can smoke cigarettes, and cigars, get drunk, be loud, and rowdy, can play loud music, and set up tent cities, why can’t the ordinary people smoke a little bit of ganja?
In general, the Town Council is utterly dubious, and its usefulness is always up for debate. For once, they should take a stand and attempt to transcend their historic mediocrity–legalize the personal use of weed on the beach. Grow a pair and just do it.
But, you say, it’s illegal to do this in the Old Dominion. Is it though? Realize that chronic is also totally illegal at the Federal level. The State of Virginia just ignored that, and did its own thing. Cape Charles would just be following the argument to its logical conclusion: this is a local issue, and we can do whatever we want, no matter what the State says. As a juvenile delinquent friend of mine once said after he was arrested for illegally raising pigs in his backyard, “F@ck the Law”.
If Virginia can ignore the Federal Government, Cape Charles can ignore Virginia.
Currently, you can smoke a blunt (or take a bong hit) privately, but not publically. But, on the beach, what is public and what is private? Private generally refers to areas that are owned and controlled by individuals. Do I not own and control my beach towel or chair? Once you have plopped down in “your’ space, it becomes your own Private Idaho, and you should be able to engage in any form of peaceful, meditative activity that you desire.
Historically, the Town has spent beaucoup bucks using lawyers for all sorts of questionable endeavors–selling the old school for $10, gifting (grifting) the developer class by raping the Annexation Agreement, as well as [insert worthless endeavor here]. Maybe now they can hire a firm that will fight for our right to party, and look into something that may actually be beneficial to Shore locals.
Let’s really look at this. What are the other benefits?
Legalizing marijuana can strengthen the community fabric–it can lead to a reduction in crime rates related to individuals being arrested for smoking weed on the beach. Moreover, legalizing marijuana helps eliminate the criminalization of non-violent offenders and reduces the burden on the criminal justice system, freeing up resources for more pressing matters such as tracking down and harassing idiots on golf carts.
Marijuana has been recognized for its potential therapeutic benefits in managing various medical conditions, including chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and nausea related to chemotherapy. Legalization can allow folks to benefit from the medicinal properties while also using it next to the water. This rich combination enhances patient care and general quality of life.
The criminalization of smoking weed on the beach has disproportionately affected marginalized communities (stoners). Legalizing weed smoking on the beach would promote equity, equality, and social justice for pot smokers.
The Town is all about Tourism, well it’s time to put their money where their mouth is. By advertising (even by word of mouth) that Cape Charles Beach is 4/20 friendly, you can expect a radical increase in tourism and related businesses. Cannabis tourism has emerged as a significant market, attracting visitors who seek to explore legal cannabis markets and participate in related activities. This influx of tourists can have a positive economic impact on local businesses, including hotels, restaurants (marijuana has been shown to increase appetite), and other tourism-oriented ventures.
It’s time for this town to move forward. Legalize it on the beach.

Dont agree
I personally do not like or want to smell that while I am relaxing on the beach . I dont believe its legal to consume alcohol there either. Another consideration is those driving vehicles or golf carts are then going to be leaving the beach intoxicated. When you say , if you sit down in your towel or beach chair is that not your own private area ? No because your are placing it on a public area .
Charles Blizzard says
I completely agree. Why should My family and myself be forced to deal with second hand smoke and stink? If they consider it a private area where you put your towel and chair, then folks should be able to enjoy nude sun bathing, right? Not that I would, but just saying.
Editor’s Note: What’s wrong with nude sun bathing?
Leo Savage says
I’m with you there. What’s wrong with nude sunbathing? Isn’t that how God created us?
Paul Plante says
God may have made us nude when we are born, but there are a lot of very ugly obese people afterwards who got there themselves without God’s help, and who wants to see them nude.
And there are a lot of nude beaches in America with ugly nude people on them, although in Cape Charles, it may well be another tourist draw for obese rich people who want to strut their stuff for everybody else to have to see.
I recall a Danish woman talking about obese Germans going to Denmark to strut their stuff on the nude beaches there, and she said if you had to look at them, you definitely would be against nude beaches.
But hey, whatever turns people on in Cape Charles, and if they can go nude on the beach, why not everywhere, especially in their golf carts and at the Lemon Tree concerts and playing corn hole and pickle ball in the park, which should be a real trip and great for the local economy.
Paul Plante says
And can you imagine, after going up into the Cape Charles beach dunes to smoke a doobie, after checking wind direction so as to not blow your smoke in other people’s faces, and getting nice and mellow, and then having to be confronted by some fatty’s naked massive butt cheeks in your face, as you are sitting there enjoying the beach view?
I suppose there is an element in Cape Charles who would find that somehow appealing, but as for me, I’ll take a pass!
Chip says
I heard the town council is planning to legalize “the weed” on the beach just for the tourons…because everything they do is just for the tourons! I also heard they are adding a golf cart access point so tourons can drive carts on the beach…especially carts with Michigan on the side of them.

Good article. BTW it is 4:20 not 4/20. It refers to 4:20 in the afternoon when we would get together after school to get high. A set time before the drinkers got busy. Yes, my generation coined the phrase.
Editor’s Note: Yes, we never know how best to present four twenty. Some prefer 4:20, others 420–we usually split the diff with 4/20.
Paul Plante says
The free rider Hussein Obama didn’t wait for 4:20, he started in the morning and then shifted to a little “blow” in the afternoon.
Hunter Biden skipped the reefer and went right to the “blow” in the morning, because he was a fortunate one, a senator’s son.
And it must be nice to be in the generation that has nothing to do every day but get high.
That’s why we older folks call this generation the worthless generation, because they just party, never having to work, nor even knowing how.
We had to work when I was young.
Reminds me of the story of the three pigs who represented society, two-thirds of which only partied and gotten eaten by the wolf as a result.
Darwinism in action!
As to Cape Charles beach and anything goes, somehow that scene of the Dothraki get-together in Game of Thrones comes to mind.
But if it brings in those tourist dollars, that is all that counts.

Insert worthless endeavor here: purchase dilapidated library for exorbitant price.

I don’t agree with the article at all. Smoke your shit at home! But it doesn’t surprise me, it’s a lawless town. The town police will only harass the law obeying citizens. Hell fentanyl has been on the shore for awhile. Is Nancy Pelosi or Gavin Newsom on the town council? You dope heads, can change the name of the town to Cape California.
Now all you snowflakes with your medical problems from working so hard all your lives. Will try to impose your drug addiction habits on those of us who once enjoy clean air at the beach.
It’s a great money maker for the town. And the advertising will read, “Come to Cape California we make sure you have a good time … we’ll give you free pot”. And you know the tourist will use pot responsibly.
Now for sure, there will not be anybody working in the restaurants, shops or town because they’ll all be at the beach … stoned.
And the people who are responsible and have the money would leave. And the town will relapsed like the good old days.
What a shithole Cape Charles has become.
All this, because someone was being a dick on the beach.
It’s never for the people but just one irresponsible pot head.
We avoid Cape Charles during the summer, we only come back to laugh at how stupid it has become.
Congratulations on your success!
Don Green says
I’m with Mr. Luther. If the town allows the beach to be occupied by a bunch of potheads, good people who just want to enjoy the sand and water will stay away. I find the very smell of pot obnoxious, and it was around me quite a bit in Vietnam. I never smoked it there, though, arguably, there was sufficient reason to do so. Why encourage lawlessness on the beach? I hope the lead article was written tongue-in-cheek only to engender a lively discussion!

I think it would be a big help if the Town Council toked up on some wild weed at the beach once & a while.
Paul Plante says
And to see what that would be like if they did, tune into a film titled “Reefer Madness” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhQlcMHhF3w

I think that is a movie about Hunter Biden.

I thought the town council has been stoned all the time.
It reflects in their decisions making.
