In a recent development, Aqua Virginia, a leading privately held water company catering to over 107,000 residents across the state, has reached an agreement with State Corporation Commission (SCC) staff regarding proposed rate hikes. These increases, averaging at 32.88% for water services and 8.3% for sewer services, are poised to impact consumers statewide.
The agreement, while still pending review by an SCC hearing examiner and the three SCC commissioners, represents a compromise between Aqua Virginia and regulatory authorities. Notably, the approved rates fall below the figures initially sought by Aqua Virginia in the preceding year, indicating a significant negotiation process.
Aqua Virginia boasts an extensive network, operating 191 water systems and nine sewer systems throughout the state. These systems cater to various communities, ranging from small facilities in Caroline, Charles City, Dinwiddie, Fluvanna, Goochland, Hanover, King William, New Kent, Powhatan to Sussex counties.
This agreement is something for Cape Charles residents to keep an eye on–the potential implications for residents and the broader utility landscape is changed now that Cape Charles utilities are now privately owned.
