We need your input! Safety on Route 13….Food Lion/Cape Charles Intersection
VDOT recently held a hearing on changes proposed at the Food Lion entrance and Cape Charles/Cheriton intersection. Thanks to all who came out. It was a good discussion, but it would be great to get more feedback about the proposed changes
The VDOT Proposal includes:…
Make turn lanes wider and longer in following locations
• Stone Road, northbound and southbound into Cape Charles
• S. Bayside Road, northbound and southbound into Cheriton
• Northbound and southbound into Food Lion
• Into the group of businesses across from Food Lion, southbound
• Into Dollar General, northbound
An alternative solution, and in my opinion, the better and safer solution:
• Add new road from Food Lion/Dollar General onto South Bayside Road. Most traffic would exit on this road. You could still go out of the current Food Lion exit to go northbound. You would not be allowed to exit out of Food Lion going southbound. The crossover at the current Food Lion intersection would be closed to all traffic. The land for this option is already owned by the state (see photo)
• Lengthen and widen the turn lanes at the Stone Road/S. Bayside (Cape Charles/Cheriton) intersection, northbound and southbound
• Reduce the speed limit from Bayview Circle (Corner Mart) to Hardee’s to 45 miles per hour
Your comments to VDOT are needed as they consider options. Your opinion matters.
Submit your written or oral comments by no later than August 3, 2018 to Mr. John Harman, Transportation Engineer, Virginia Department of Transportation, 1700 North Main Street, Suffolk, VA 23434. You may also e-mail your comments to JohnG.Harman@VDOT.Virginia.gov. Please reference “Route 13 at Stone Road Comments” in the subject line.
Please take the time to go to the VDOT link for more information and to make your voice heard. DEADLINE AUGUST 3

Thank you! I sent my comment in favor of the alternate solution that you presented.

Having yellow lights which change to flashing as the stoplight changes to red, like they now have at the Cheriton/Townfield Road light would also be beneficial in slowing the speed of traffic approaching this area.
Jackie Lombardo says
Would also be good to see redevelopment that allows the Cape Charles Shopping Center (Food Lion) to provide a more pedestrian-focused experience. Many folks would walk or bike from Cape Charles if it was safe – another way to make our tourists happy!

I am in favor of the alternate solution also.
I spend 2 months in Cherrystone Campground so when I need to food shop I go to the FoodLion, I find that area to be very dangerous, especially for those turning left onto 13-S and those turning left into FoodLion.

The whole are is a mess and there should be some improvements.
Cape Charles and the entire ES is growing and it’s time 13 grows with it.
Blue Hoss says
The ‘Area’ is not a mess….the people, now that is a whole different ball of wax.
