Cape Charles Main Street officials say this year’s Love Run exceeded expectations, drawing 550 registered runners before registration was capped last Saturday — surpassing the organization’s original goal of 500 participants.
Main Street leaders said the strong turnout marks another milestone for the growing community event and could pave the way for the race to become officially sanctioned in the future. Organizers noted that the planned opening of the Eastern Shore Rail to Trail system is expected to make that process easier and could enhance future race routes and logistics.
In addition to the successful Love Run, Cape Charles Main Street is preparing to host a regional business development program on May 14 at the Impact Center. The “Rev-Up” event, organized in partnership with Virginia Main Street through the Department of Housing and Community Development and the Impact Center, will feature presentations from Retail Alliance focused on strengthening independent retailers and downtown business districts.
According to organizers, the program is designed for Main Street leaders, small businesses, and community partners, providing training and tools aimed at supporting long-term economic vitality. Participation has already reached 31 attendees, with enrollment capped at 40.
Main Street officials also reported continued growth across their social media platforms. The Cape Charles Visitor Center social media presence now totals approximately 18,700 followers, including 13,600 on Facebook and 5,100 on Instagram. Marketing efforts over the past month focused heavily on promoting the Love Run, with advertising concentrated within a two-hour travel radius during the final weeks leading up to the event.
The organization also announced continued promotion of local businesses through advertising in Virginia Living magazine’s annual “Best Of” issue, highlighting Cape Charles businesses recognized in this year’s rankings.
Several grant applications were completed and submitted in recent weeks, including a Virginia Tourism Corporation marketing grant and multiple Northampton County grant applications supporting events and projects such as Love Run, Lovefest, Festive Fridays, Gateway Beautification, and the Discovery Map initiative. A separate T-Mobile grant application was submitted for bicycle rack funding.
Main Street representatives said staff also attended the Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Conference, met with Rails to Trails leadership, and continued coordination on the next edition of the Discovery Map, which is expected to be released in January.
Preparations are also underway for Sailfest merchandise sales, vendor coordination, and upcoming community events. Officials said merchandise ordered for Sailfest will first be tested during Lovefest sales this year.
Main Street additionally hosted a recent “MS Connect” networking event at Almeta, with the next gathering scheduled aboard the Chesapeake Queen.
