READER SUBMITTED ISSUE: Why does the Town of Cape Charles tolerate this eyesore?
I wonder…. On the land owned by the town of Cape Charles at the corner of Fig Street and Randolph Avenue there’s a beautiful children’s garden. But between the garden and the old Fitzhugh property, there’s piles of golf cart parts, pallets and just plain trash laying on town property. This eyesore has gotten worse, not better over the last few summers. Why does the town allow a business (Custom Carts) to store junk on their property? The golf cart people, will not clean it up. And at the town offices…talking to building code officials, planning, the town manager, the mayor….nobody seems to have the interest or authority to act.
Thanks a bunch for the heads up in your blog, Wayne! I’m heading over to my shop now to handle it.
Note: The citizen that sent this in has been trying to get some movement on this issue for the last year, from you and the town. As a last resort, she contacted the online Newspaper The Cape Charles Mirror for help. If this citizen submitted article in the online Newspaper The Cape Charles Mirror finally got you ‘handle it’, then we are happy that this issue has been resolved, and we can all be more considerate of others in the future.
I’m wondering if the tidy citizen who reported this issue (which I never noticed) can come over to the Central Park and take photographs of those who do not pick up after their dogs? I’m out there a lot and never see the offenders. Could be they tiptoe in under cover of darkness.
In regards to Poop in the Park, we’ve walked there several times and there are never any poop bags in the dispensers. I agree, most respectful dog walkers carry there own bags. Come on folks, do us all a favor and scoop the poop…
I missed the part in the citizen submitted story where the author approached the owners of Custom Carts and asked them to clean up the area. It seems like as soon as they were informed that it was a problem for somebody they took care of it. I am not affiliated with Custom Carts in any way. We bought our golf cart off of Craigslist before we moved up here. I have to say though, those are some hard working people. I see them out there every day from early in the morning to late in the evening. It’s good to see a business in town having success selling something besides souvenirs.
Cape Charles is a small town. Before we start seeking redress for grievances through the passage of new city ordinances or putting our neighbors on blast via the local online newspaper maybe we should just try talking to one another directly.
Note: While this was sent in, we did ask whether this needed to be published. According to the writer, “I am worn out trying to get the golf cart people, to clean it up. I’ve made a pest of myself at the town offices…talking to building code officials, planning, the manager, the mayor….nobody seems to have the interest or authority to act.” While we were not thrilled about it, we understood that the situation had the potential to turn ugly; so if a little nudge on our part could diffuse it, we thought that would be better than what appeared to be looming. Cape Charles is a small town…I think there is a quote about that in the film Cool Hand Luke.
