Say What? Public hearing set for Bed &…No Breakfast?

November 18, 2018 by Wayne Creed 7 Comments

Staff received an application for a conditional use permit to operate a bed and breakfast\tourist home at 610 Washington Avenue. However, according to the applicants, it will be kind of like a bed and breakfast, only it won’t serve breakfast.

What? Not even a cup of dry Cheerios and a cold PBR to wash it down (Mirror staff’s breakfast of choice)?

So, how is this a bed…and breakfast? Isn’t it just a bed & go fend for yourself, or a bed & screw you I’m sleeping in?

Part of letter sent to town.

At any rate, a public hearing on this has been set for December 4, 2018 at 6:00.

The 411: This property is a conforming size residential lot within the Residential – 1 District. The location for the proposed bed and breakfast\tourist house shows an on-site driveway the length of the lot and can accommodate off-street parking, and a garage. The applicants propose to open a small unit of approximately two-hundred and twenty (220) square feet to guests, and retain the rest of the house for family use. The applicants will continue to occupy the building. No changes to the exterior appearance of the building are proposed.- staff report.

I don’t see what the hell they need a permit for. I believe they’ve got some kind of get rich quick scheme going on or maybe looking to scam someone. I SAY TURN THE PERMIT DOWN!

Sounds like an AirBnB, without the AirBnB….
Does Cape Charles require a business license for irregular rental of accommodations through internet portals like AirBnB similar to the license for short term (less than 6 months) leasing, hotels and Bed & Breakfast locations (with or without breakfast)?

The only shooting in Sandbridge occurred because of an unsupervised Air BandB.

“Get rich quick” scheme? Seriously? For a one bed cottage? Well sure, if they can find a moron willing to pay a million bucks a night, but it’s more like $100 to a $125 per night, may get 25 nights a season.

Cheebus, y’all really hate anyone who may try to get ahead, doncha?

Mike; it is more about paying a fair share of taxes if not a BNB, AIRNB but an actual vacation rental.

        Permit fees.
        Inspection fees.
        Property taxes.
        Sales taxes.
        Occupancy taxes.
What more do you want them to pay?

As per the “411”, it is a legal, permitted use. It will be taxed as that use, as would any other similar structure in CC.

Seriously, what is it about the liberal denizens of ESVA that they insist on punishing effort and opportunity?

Not sure how this qualifies for anything but being taxed as a vacation rental. Free standing; check. Rents; check. No breakfast and not w/in the house itself; check. Sounds like a detached free standing vacation rental to me.
