  1. I think the writer above makes some excellent recommendations on managing STR’s.

Both Northampton Co. and Cape Charles should be very concerned as the number of Short Term Rentals ( STR) increase.

Across the bay Va. Beach has had a very difficult time trying to get a handle on the skyrocketing numbers of request to operate STR’s.

In the end the Va. Beach government did not agree on a plan managing these STR’S in the resort area. The North End, made of of mostly full time owner occupied homes obtained relief by having the council not allow any future request for STR’S.

Two impacts from allowing STR’s in owner occupied neighborhoods:

    1. Private investment co. buy up homes and use them solely as STR’S impacting both home values and more importantly the continuity of owner occupied communities.

    2. Allowing STR’s requires government oversight regarding safety of the occupied unit.
STR’S can often be leased multiple times a week by different tenants.

I hope both Northampton Co., but particularly Cape Charles, thinks thru the impacts of Short Term Rentals. Laws and rules need to be in place prior establishing any STR homes or overlay districts .

  2. Remember these short term rentals are what is keeping all your small businesses up and running. Many are using these as second homes, so of course they are not going to be primary and a short term rental. There aren’t many jobs to support a 600-700k house in the shore to stay there full time, so if you would rather have delapitated building then that is what tougher redirections will cause.

    1. Christina
Real Estate Co”s handle almost all of the summer rentals in Cape Charles. These are on a weekly basis and they are responsible for safety, noise,, parking and damage issues.

STR’s are rented by the properties owner and often rented nightly. No one has oversight on the safety condition of the house ( deck railings, fire alarms etc).
Read the STR rules for Va. Beach. STR’S there are limited to specific areas and very thorough on issues of safety, noise and parking.
Lastly, many of the cottages in Cape Charles may be second homes, but are often used exclusively by the owner.

  3. I empathize with Dr. Dalessio and his neighbors. Short term rentals are out of control. All we hear from the county is the need for affordable housing. That’s simply a guise to create more housing units. Restrict these short term rentals and we will have an abundance of affordable workforce housing. Short term rentals drive up assessments and in turn property taxes. When you vote for BOS support the candidate(s) who wants to restrict these rentals not those who want more.
