The following Op-Ed was written and submitted via email by G. William Waisewater.
That giant flushing sound that you hear? …… The Cape Charles town government at work, wasting all of your tax dollars. The so-called high-end public restrooms, the horse trailer with a toilet has remained locked with power attached and still on since the end of last summer—this is causing a major stink with downtown shoppers and tourists. These air conditioned restrooms have been locked going on 9 months or more, all at public expense. How is the public supposed to access them when a person is in need?
Has the mayor, town manager or any members of council tried using the “downtown” porta-potties?
Toxic Toilet Trailer questions : 1) how much did the trailer cost? 2) what is wrong/broken how much does it cost to fix? 3) who made decision Not to Fix? 4) was anything ever put in writing ( work Order?) regarding the trailer? 5) when will a New facility be completed? 6) are there plans and an estimation of cost for new facilities? 7) has the mayor and council been made aware of situation and are they in agreement with town staff decision not to fix, or has the town thought about leasing a similar type trailer? 8) does anyone at 2 Plum Street “give a crap?
$896,115 is going to 88 businesses and they still can’t fix the thing.
Public officials have offered no explanation except to say that the town has plans for a new, permanent facility in a few years. No one, including the Town Manager seems to be aware that something is wrong, that the thing is broken, or whether any good faith efforts have been made to fix the problem.
Instead, we hear that they don’t want to micro-manage anyone in the chain of command. Former manager Larry DiRe took a much more hands on approach to problem solving, and a little bit of that would go a long way here.
The public deserves better than this half-ass approach to problem solving, this half-ass approach to town management, especially the toilet problem. We are better than this.
The concerned public should contact the town at 331-3259 and request an explanation for this waste of public resources and poor management. We should demand an estimate as to when the restrooms will be in operation and open to the public again. Festive Fridays are right around the corner.
The town is starting to stink and it’s not just the raw sewage.
We can do better than this Cape Charles!
It’s time to wake up, all of you on 2 Plum Street. Come on, Man,
Where is the concern from the Mainstreet People? Where is the concern from the merchants, or from the new Cape Charles Historic District Civic League, or the Chamber of Commerce? Where is the dignity in this gross display of negligence?
What is the cost to fix the problem? Mr. Town Manager, can you explain?
Enough of this incompetence. Will any council person make the effort? Discussion anyone? Will anyone go on record with this topic? Mayor? Town Manager? Council? Mayor and Town Council candidates? Downtown bourgeoisie? Proletariat? Man on the Street?

While touring the town with out of town guests this weekend, the porta potties on the trail to the Shanty were handy…embarrassing and subpar but useful.

Sub-par? How special do you think you are?

Saturday late mid morning as I looked for parking to go to the Bakery on Mason and circled into the area holding this public facility a tall woman with an orange top was going up the steps. As I promptly circled to exit having learned there was no public parking she was back at ground level walking extremely slowly which struck me as odd. Clearly she was not comfortable.
