WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA) voted today for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to enhance background checks, provide funding for states to administer red flag laws, and crack down on the illegal straw purchase of weapons.
The Senate negotiated legislation passed the House of Representatives today and will now head to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law.
“Congress is acting to keep our children and our communities safe, and I was proud to support this bipartisan, commonsense legislation today,” Rep. Luria said. “We must strike the right balance between responsible gun ownership and safety, and this legislation to expand background checks and crack down on illegal purchases is the first step to ending gun violence.”
Earlier this month, Rep. Luria voted to advance the Protecting Our Kids Act, a bipartisan package of reforms to raise the purchasing age on semi-automatic weapons, prohibit high-capacity magazines and bump stocks, crack down on gun trafficking, subject ghost guns to background check requirements, and strengthen safe storage requirements.
Rep. Luria previously voted to advance the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and Enhanced Background Checks Act to prevent guns from winding up in the wrong hands with commonsense exceptions for gun transfers between immediate family members and temporary transfers for the purpose of hunting or target shooting.
