Northampton is becoming one of the state’s hotbeds for soccer. The continued statewide success of John Gorman’s Northampton squad is proof that there are good things happening now, and there is much more to come. Gorman understands that this does not happen all at once, but that the championship payoff comes only after years of hard work and dedication. During the summer, some of Northampton’s future stars are beginning the work that will someday lead to a state championship as they attend John Gorman’s workout sessions.
SHER HOROSKO: Shore Beauty Never Leaves Us
By Sher Horosko
When I arrived on the Shore in the Spring of 2013, I came as a settler to a new land. I wrote about the beauty of the natural world, that is, your natural world. There is so much to love.I watched, (for a rather long time), the sword fights of the fiddler crabs.
They moved like a murmuration of starlings in a fall sky, always streaming together, back to their sandy holes. I never could surprise them. Not once. And yes, I tried.
It had been a long while since I moved in such a watery world. I drank it up. My eyes were fresh and my heart, wide open.
Historic District Review Board: Brew Pubs and Hot Dogs
There has been some level of excitement around town over the possibility of a brew pub coming to the vacant structure that sits next to the laundromat on Peach Street. With equipment on the way, and momentum building, a brew pub future was beginning to take shape—except for one thing. When Town Planner Larry DiRe went to examine the Town’s future land use map, he discovered the proposed property was actually zoned R-1 residential; that is, commercial use is strictly forbidden. What this does to cost and timelines, as well as how it affects the overall viability of the project is yet to be seen. As far as options, the project can apply for a conditional use permit (with no stipulations), or they can wait for the Planning Commission to update the map (if they will).
Smitty’s Clam Slam 2015
It’s that time again. Time for Smitty’s 2015 Clam Slam. Each year, we wonder how our harbor master Smitty Dize is going to match what he did last year, yet each time, the Clam Slam just keeps getting better and better. And this year is no different. The line up of events and music is packed with excitement. The CC Mirror staff personally can’t wait for one of Cape Charles’ all time favorites, Mercy Creek who will be performing at 2:00 on the main stage.

County: BoS keeps District 4 polling in place
When the Northampton Board of Supervisors met last Tuesday, the possibility that the District 4 polling place may be moved from the Machipongo Middle School to the A.M.E. Church in Eastville, a 9 mile round trip from the current polling location, set off a flurry of angst and speculation. Ken Dufty of Exmore contacted Virginia Department of Elections Commissioner Cortes with this letter:
[Excerpt] Re: Arbitrary Attempt by Electoral Board of the County of Northampton to Switch District 4 Polling Place for November 2015 Election when no “rare and unforeseen combination of Circumstances” exist pursuant to Code 242.2-310.
Dear Commissioner Cortes,I am writing as a resident of District 4 in Northampton County, … we are asking you to investigate and hopefully intervene in an attempt by the County of Northampton, Virginia Electoral Board to interfere with the normal and predictable conduct of the upcoming November, 2015 general election. Monsanto Herbicides killing Monarch Butterflies
Research from scientists at the Greenpeace International Science Unit , with its laboratories in University of Exeter in the UK have produced evidence that the introduction of genetically engineered (GE) crops such as the herbicide-tolerant Roundup Ready corn and soy is having adverse effects on farmland plants. As the use of agro-giant Monsanto’s Roundup grows, and is coming much stronger formulas, researchers now believe that this is a major factor in the decline in monarch butterflies.
The biggest issue with the powerful Roundup herbicide is that it kills all plants in its path, except for the GE crop. Unfortunately, that also goes for milkweed, which is the only plant that monarch butterflies lay their eggs. After hatching, the monarch caterpillars use milkweed for food. Milkweed used to be able to sprout up in between rows, but use of powerful herbicides have all be eliminated it from farmland. This means that the monarchs must fly further just to find a place to lay their eggs. The extended search for milkweed leads to a depletion of body fat—this leads to fewer eggs. Some may die before ever laying eggs.
There things that can be done, such as planting native plants. The folks at Appleseed can give you the run down on how native plants co-evolved with the native wildlife and form the foundation of habitat for pollinators like bees and butterflies. [Read more…]
Sommer & Sturgis: analysis of Industrial Maritime Sewage
After the JIDA plan to bring raw sewage from tankers and deposit it in town made its rounds, Heinz Sommer and Janet Sturgis each sent in some fine data and analysis. We thought it was important information that needed to be out there, and that both works complemented each other, so here it is:
Heinz Sommer
To the decision makers of Northampton County and the town of Cape Charles!
Subject: Industrial maritime sewage brought to Cape Charles.
Before we spend any more useless activities, energy, thoughts and money on this topic, I urgently request that medical- bacteriological and virological disease professionals get contacted and study this subject thoroughly. This study can be done by universities, and/or research centers as well as government institutions (e.g. The Department of Disease Control) – at no cost to Local Taxpayers – [Read more…]
Tyson farm in Delmarva caught on video torturing chickens
Karen Davis of United Poultry Concerns and my daughter alerted me to this story within minutes of each other. A new Mercy For Animals investigative report has exposed animal abuse at McGinnis Farm right up the road in Dagsboro, Delaware, a contract farm for Tyson Foods. Mercy for Animals undercover video shows workers violently clubbing animals to death, breaking their necks, and leaving severely sick and injured animals to die without food or water, baby birds carelessly thrown to the ground from transport crates suffering broken bones and other severe injuries, thousands of birds crammed into filthy, windowless sheds forced to live for weeks in their own waste and toxic ammonia fumes.
